Flight Cancelled Days Before Departure: What to Do

When a flight is cancelled several days before departure, do not immediately buy a replacement ticket without first clarifying the booking and the carrier’s proposed solution. The key questions are whether all segments were sold under one contract, whether the original carrier has cancelled the service, and which parts of the journey are separately ticketed.

Short answer. A cancellation may give the passenger a basis to seek a refund of the unused carriage or to consider the carrier’s proposed alternative. The correct remedy and the scope of any refund depend on the ticket, payment, cancellation notice and the contractual route.

Check the booking structure before choosing an option

Save the cancellation notice and compare it with the itinerary, booking reference and payment confirmation. A through itinerary sold under one booking can raise different questions from two independent tickets purchased separately. Do not assume that the carrier of the cancelled segment is automatically responsible for every later independently booked flight or hotel expense.

Ask the carrier for its recorded position

Request the available options in writing: refund of the unused carriage, an alternative itinerary, or another solution offered under the contract. If a travel agent or platform issued the ticket, clarify who accepts the request and who received the payment. Keep proof of each request and response.

Refunds and forced refusal

The Air Code distinguishes voluntary refusal by the passenger from a forced refusal connected with circumstances such as a delay or other carrier action or inaction that leads to non-performance or improper performance of the carriage contract. The applicable route should be identified from the actual facts and current aviation rules rather than from a generic description of a cancellation.

Where another person paid for the ticket, the refund recipient can also matter. Check the payment evidence and the carrier’s stated procedure.

Separate tickets, connections and extra costs

If the cancelled flight affects another segment, collect the documents for the full itinerary before making a claim. Explain whether the second segment was part of the same contract or purchased independently. For international travel, foreign law and international carriage rules may affect the analysis.

Practical checklist

  1. Save the cancellation email, SMS or application notice with its date and time.
  2. Keep the ticket, terms, itinerary, booking reference and payment record.
  3. Ask for the refund or alternative route you prefer, in writing.
  4. Do not cancel other arrangements before checking whether the ticket is one contract or separate tickets.
  5. Keep receipts for consequential expenses, but do not assume they are automatically recoverable.
