Requirements for the condition of roads and streets in Russia are governed by GOST R 50597-2017. Assessment of a pothole or another defect depends on its location, dimensions, road category and the circumstances of the incident.
What to record
- location, date and time;
- photographs and video with a recognisable reference point;
- defect dimensions where safe to do so;
- vehicle damage and witness details;
- complaints to the road organisation or authorities.
Repair periods
The standard sets requirements and repair periods for different defects, but they vary by surface type and road conditions. Do not apply one figure to every case without checking the relevant part of the standard.
A claim for loss requires proof of causation, the responsible road owner and the amount of loss.
