Unpaid Leave in Russia: Request and Approval

RUSSIAN LAW · PRACTICAL GUIDE

Record the dates and grounds for absence

Unpaid leave is arranged following an employee’s written request. Normally its duration is agreed with the employer; Russian law also specifies cases in which the employer must grant it.

What to include in the request

  • The start and end dates.
  • The applicable ground if relying on a statutory entitlement.
  • Supporting documents where needed to establish that ground.

What to avoid

Do not assume that absence has been approved merely because a request was submitted. The employer’s decision and the required documentation matter. Collective agreements and internal policies may also be relevant.

A lawyer can assess documents and a dispute but does not replace the employer’s HR process.

How to document approval

Keep the dated request and proof of submission. Confirm the decision, approved absence period and HR document. If the leave is mandatory on a statutory ground, provide evidence of that ground and document any refusal.
