If you are charged after cancelling a subscription, keep proof of your cancellation, identify the payment recipient and send a refund demand. Also turn off renewal and expressly refuse further use of the payment details you previously supplied. These steps serve different purposes: ending the service, preventing further recurring charges and recovering money already taken.
Legal provisions checked on 21 October 2026. This guide concerns consumer online subscriptions under Russian law. Business contracts and foreign services require a separate review of their terms and applicable law.
End the service
Disable renewal and notify the provider that you withdraw from the service contract if you no longer need it.
Stop payment-data use
Separately refuse the use of previously supplied payment details for recurring charges.
Claim the disputed amount
Compare the cancellation date, billing period, recipient and legal basis of each charge.
What to do immediately after a subscription charge
- Check the transaction. Save a bank statement or transaction certificate showing the date, amount and recipient, the service receipt, plan and billing period. A merchant descriptor in a banking app does not always identify the legal entity.
- Find where you subscribed. It may be the provider’s website, an app store, a telecom operator or another supplier’s bundle. Check accounts and email addresses: cancellation in one profile does not end a different contract.
- Record cancellation. Capture the subscription status and support history, keep emails and the ticket number. Note the date, time and notification method.
- Make two clear statements. Withdraw from the service contract and refuse the use of previously supplied details for recurring payments. Ask for confirmation of receipt and the termination date.
- Request a specific refund. List the disputed transactions and attach evidence. Merely asking to cancel does not demand repayment of money already taken.
What changed for online subscriptions on 1 March 2026
Paragraph 4.2 of Article 16.1 of the Russian Consumer Protection Law prevents a provider from using previously supplied bank-account details or electronic-payment-instrument data for recurring payments once the consumer has told the provider not to use them. The rule concerns subscription services supplied online through a website, information system or software. The provider must accept such a refusal, including electronically. Federal Law No. 376-FZ of 15 October 2025 introduced the amendment.
Refusing payment-data use does not itself end the contract or erase a valid debt. If you no longer need the service, withdraw from the contract separately. Under Article 32 of the Consumer Protection Law, consumers may withdraw from a service contract at any time, subject to paying expenses actually incurred in performing that contract. Termination timing depends on receipt of the notice and applicable terms; Article 450.1 of the Civil Code sets out the general rule.
| Action | What it establishes | What else to do |
|---|---|---|
| Uninstalling the app | The app is absent from a device | Notify the provider: uninstalling is insufficient evidence that the contract has ended |
| Disabling automatic renewal | No next renewal within the service’s terms | Check the current end date; separately withdraw from the contract and refuse payment-data use if necessary |
| Refusing payment-data use | Refusal of a particular method of subsequent recurring collection | Resolve the contract and any existing payment obligations separately |
| Sending a contract-withdrawal notice | An intention to end the service | Keep proof of receipt and expressly request repayment |
Evidence of cancellation and payment
Evidence checklist before sending a demand
Keep original emails and files rather than only cropped pictures. Screenshots should identify the service, profile, date and result. If a cancellation button fails, record the error and send notice through the provider’s published channel with delivery evidence. Identify payments safely: you do not need to disclose the full card number, CVC/CVV or verification codes.
How to calculate the refund
Separate charges for periods before withdrawal, charges after contract termination and charges after refusal of payment-data use. Identify the period covered by every payment. A charge made after cancellation might relate to an earlier obligation; the sequence of dates alone does not decide the dispute.
Not logging into an app does not always mean no fee was due. Under Article 429.4 of the Civil Code, subscription payments are generally due regardless of whether the subscriber requested performance. Establish whether the contract remained in force, whether the agreed right of access was supplied and when notice was received. Counting films watched or lessons opened does not automatically answer these questions.
Hypothetical example 1 — two later charges. The provider receives both withdrawal and refusal of payment-data use on 5 October. It then charges RUB 599 on 10 October and another RUB 599 on 20 October for new periods. If neither payment has a valid basis, the initial claim is RUB 1,198. After a RUB 599 refund, RUB 599 remains outstanding. This illustrates arithmetic, not an actual court case.
Hypothetical example 2 — annual prepayment. An annual price of RUB 12,000 does not automatically establish a refund of RUB 1,000 for every remaining month. Request the provider’s calculation: plan terms, period of access, legal basis for deductions and evidence of expenses. Challenge unsupported deductions separately; general business overheads or a fixed cancellation penalty should not automatically be accepted as expenses under your contract.
Sample notice and refund demand
Adapt this text to the actual facts. If you never sent a cancellation notice, do not invent an earlier date: send notice now and separately explain why you dispute a previous charge.

Subscription withdrawal notice and refund demand
Account [identifier] holds subscription [name, plan, contract number if available]. I withdraw from the subscription service contract under Article 32 of the Russian Consumer Protection Law. Please stop supplying the service and renewing the subscription.
I also refuse the use of the bank-account details and electronic-payment-instrument data I previously supplied for recurring payments under this subscription, pursuant to paragraph 4.2 of Article 16.1 of that Law. Payment-instrument identifier: [sufficient safe details, such as the last four card digits].
[If notice was sent earlier: the provider received my notice on [date, method, evidence].] Nevertheless, [amounts] were charged on [dates] for [periods]. Please refund [total] rubles less [amount] rubles already repaid. Basis of the demand: [specify the documented issue — a charge for a new period after contract termination / payment-data use after refusal / other established facts].
Please confirm receipt and the subscription end date and state your refund decision. If you disagree, provide a reasoned reply, the contractual and legal basis of each charge, a calculation of deductions and supporting documents. Please repay by [agreed safe method].

[Date, name / signature for a paper submission]
Send the demand to the contracting provider using its official details. For app-store or intermediary payments, establish the intermediary’s role and refund procedure: a technical payment recipient is not always the service provider. Refund deadlines depend on the legal basis of the claim; a universal promise that every subscription must be refunded within ten days is inaccurate. You may propose a reply deadline if you expressly identify it as a proposed period.
If the provider refuses or does not respond
- Clarify the refusal. A no-refunds clause does not replace an assessment of termination timing, the billing period and lawful deductions. Ask for evidence of renewal consent, service provision and receipt of notice.
- Contact your bank. Attach evidence and accurately describe a disputed transaction. Ask about procedures available for this payment method, submission deadlines and ways to prevent new charges. A bank dispute does not guarantee repayment or replace withdrawal from the service contract.
- Complain to Rospotrebnadzor. Identify the provider, timeline and alleged breach; attach your demand and reply or delivery evidence. A supervisory complaint is different from obtaining an individual money judgment.
- Prepare a court claim if unresolved. Assemble contract, payment and cancellation evidence and a calculation. Additional remedies depend on their legal grounds and the facts; do not add penalties automatically.
Rospotrebnadzor’s explanation of 3 March 2026 appears in its official notice on cancellation and disputed charges. If the provider is already in bankruptcy, examine the applicable creditor-claim procedure separately: an ordinary demand does not replace a filing required by that procedure.
Frequently asked questions about subscription refunds
I uninstalled the app. Why am I still being charged?
Uninstalling does not prove the provider received notice. Check the place where you subscribed, notify it of contract withdrawal and refusal of payment-data use, and keep confirmation.
I removed my card but was charged. What must I prove?
Keep confirmation and establish whether the action communicated refusal of payment-data use, which provider received it and when. Identify the evidence in your demand; if unclear, also send an express written refusal.
Can I get a refund simply because I did not use the subscription?
Non-use alone does not guarantee a refund: a subscription fee may pay for a right of access. Check consent, disclosure of terms, withdrawal timing, provision of the agreed performance and the basis of the amount retained.
Is an annual charge after a free trial always unlawful?
No. Establish whether the price and renewal were agreed, whether notice arrived before the charge and what period it covered. Save the subscription screen and trial terms; identify a specific breach in your claim.
Is blocking the bank card enough?
It may protect the payment instrument but does not end the subscription obligation. Notify the provider separately. Ask your bank whether it can block particular recurring transactions.
Who handles a subscription bought through an app store?
Identify the contracting party and recipient from the receipt and signup terms. Use the platform’s refund process, while distinguishing its role from the provider’s. Keep each ticket number and response.
