Refunding an online course bought in instalments starts with checking two contracts: the training or service contract and the purchase-financing agreement. Notifying the school does not automatically close a loan. Withdraw from the service separately, calculate the unperformed portion and arrange refund allocation and early repayment with the creditor.
Legal provisions checked on 21 October 2026. This guide covers consumer withdrawal from a course under Russian law. If the online school is in bankruptcy, a different money-claim procedure applies; see the separate guide linked below.
Record course delivery
What was promised, what was delivered and which modules, assessments and consultations remain.
Notify the school
Address withdrawal to the contracting provider and request a supported calculation of deductions.
Check the loan
Establish the outstanding balance, refund route and actual repayment date.
School instalments or a bank loan: how to tell
Read the signed documents rather than a zero-interest advertisement. Identify the creditor, individual terms, total cost of credit where applicable, payment schedule and evidence of transfer to the provider. A bank may have paid the entire course price immediately while the student repays the bank in instalments.
| Payment arrangement | Who you owe | What to check on withdrawal |
|---|---|---|
| The provider’s own instalment plan | The school under the service contract | Services already supplied, sums paid and the refund or supported remaining amount due |
| Bank consumer credit or a loan | A separate creditor | Course withdrawal, price refund and early loan repayment require separate steps |
| A separate pay-in-parts service | As determined by its agreement and payment arrangement | Who holds the payment claim and how refunds work; do not assume every such service is a bank |
Can you withdraw after access to the course has opened?
For consumer service contracts, Article 32 of the Consumer Protection Law permits withdrawal at any time, subject to expenses actually incurred in performing that particular contract. Account separately for services already delivered and avoid deducting the same costs twice.
Opening an account does not universally determine the refund. Compare the contract’s subject matter and promised stages: recordings, webinars, assessment of homework, mentoring, consultations and the access period. If the agreement includes a genuine separate digital-content licence, assess its terms and performance separately; calling a product a licence does not settle what was actually sold.
Cancellation penalties must be assessed under paragraph 2 of Article 16 of the Consumer Protection Law. A fixed non-refundable percentage should not automatically be treated as a lawful expense under your contract. Equally, a full refund cannot be promised regardless of performance.
What to save before access is removed
Course-refund and loan document checklist
Keep your own documents and evidence of course status without distributing copyrighted material. If a parent paid while a child studied, identify the contracting parties and the applicant’s authority: payer, customer and student may be different people.
Calculating a refund without double-counting
Start with the documented actual price and the amount received by the provider. The advertised pre-discount price, total future loan payments and the school’s actual receipts are different figures. Request a breakdown of stage prices, performance, expenses and previous refunds.
Hypothetical example, not a court case. The course costs RUB 120,000: the student pays RUB 20,000 and the bank transfers RUB 100,000 to the school. Assume the parties have agreed and supported RUB 30,000 for services already delivered, with no other permissible deductions. The price refund is RUB 120,000 − RUB 30,000 = RUB 90,000. If RUB 10,000 has already been refunded, RUB 80,000 remains payable by the school.
You cannot claim RUB 90,000 as a price refund plus another RUB 100,000 as a loan refund: the bank transfer is already included in the course payment. The bank’s outstanding principal and interest are calculated separately. Agree who transfers the refund and where, taking both contracts into account, then confirm actual crediting with the lender.
The percentage of videos watched does not necessarily equal the value of services delivered. If the school allocates most of the price to the first module, request the basis of that allocation and performance evidence. Do not automatically accept its figures or substitute an unsupported percentage of your own.
Arranging the refund and early loan repayment
- Tell the creditor about the dispute. Attach the withdrawal notice and establish the refund account and payment reference. Written notice alone does not suspend loan instalments.
- Ask for the repayment amount on a specified date. Under Article 11 of Federal Law No. 353-FZ, early repayment includes interest for the actual period of borrowing. Within the first 14 calendar days after receiving an ordinary consumer loan, or the first 30 calendar days for a purpose-specific loan, the law permits full or partial repayment without prior notice. Outside those windows, the general notice period is at least 30 calendar days unless the agreement provides a shorter one. Check the loan type and prescribed application method.
- Submit the required repayment instruction. Do not assume that money arriving in an account automatically fulfils an early-repayment request. Confirm how much the creditor will apply and on what date.
- Obtain the outcome document. For full repayment, request confirmation that nothing remains due; for partial repayment, obtain an updated schedule. If the refund was insufficient, establish the remaining balance rather than stopping payments based on the school’s promise.
Two samples: to the course provider and the creditor
1. Notice to the school and refund demand
To [provider name, official postal / electronic address]. From [customer, contact, contract number].
I withdraw from the service contract for online course [name, date, plan] under Article 32 of the Russian Consumer Protection Law. Please confirm receipt and termination of services. [For an education programme: please formally terminate the educational relationship and supply the relevant order.]
The provider received [total] rubles, including [amount] from credit financing. Services delivered by the withdrawal date: [list]; outstanding services: [list]. Please refund [amount] rubles less [amount] already repaid, according to the attached calculation. If you disagree, provide a calculation of deductions, their legal basis and supporting performance and expense documents without counting the same amounts twice.
Please agree a safe refund process taking account of payment under credit agreement [number, creditor], and state the transfer date and details. Attachments: contract, payment evidence, performance records and calculation. [Date, name / signature.]
2. Enquiry to the creditor about refund allocation and repayment
To [creditor]. From [borrower, contact, credit agreement number].
Credit agreement [number, date] financed services [provider, course]. I have notified the provider of withdrawal and requested a refund of [amount] rubles. Please explain refund allocation and full / partial early repayment, the required application form, notice period and principal plus interest payable on [date].
Please explain whether a further instruction from me is needed once the refund arrives. After repayment, please supply confirmation of no outstanding debt or a revised schedule. This enquiry does not replace a dedicated early-repayment instruction where the applicable process requires one. Attachments: demand to the school, payment evidence and an agreed calculation if available. [Date, name / signature.]
If the school refuses to refund
Identify the basis first: you changed your mind, or the provider breached the agreement. For defective services, assess the available remedies, including price reduction and withdrawal where the legal conditions are met, under Article 29 of the Consumer Protection Law. A substantial defect and ordinary dissatisfaction are different. Delay in performance requires its own assessment.
State specific facts in the demand: promised assessments were absent, classes did not take place or an agreed stage was never supplied. Attach the contract, programme and correspondence. Identify disputed deductions separately. Refund deadlines and additional remedies depend on the chosen legal basis; do not apply one deadline and set of penalties automatically to every withdrawal.
If the consumer dispute remains unresolved, you may complain to Rospotrebnadzor and pursue a money claim in court. A supervisory complaint does not close a loan. If the school shows signs of bankruptcy, check its status and the applicable creditor-claim deadlines.
Frequently asked questions
The school says there is nothing to refund because I have not repaid the loan. Is that right?
Check how much the school already received from the bank and from you. If the bank paid the full price, your outstanding bank debt does not itself mean the provider was unpaid.
Does access to every lesson rule out a refund?
No automatic conclusion follows. Assess the contract, any genuine separate licences, promised stages and performance evidence. Video access, mentoring and individual classes may have different values and levels of completion.
The school returned money to my credit account. Is the loan closed?
Check crediting, execution of the repayment instruction, accrued interest and the balance. For full repayment, obtain confirmation of no debt; for partial repayment, get an updated schedule.
Can I recover all bank interest from the school?
It is not automatically part of a price refund. A damages claim requires a specific breach, a supported connection with the expense and a calculation. Interest due to the creditor for actual borrowing is assessed separately from the course-price dispute.
I cancelled the next day. Does a fourteen-day rule apply?
Distinguish service withdrawal from early loan repayment. Consumer withdrawal from services is not subject to a general fourteen-day limit; the 14- and 30-day windows in Article 11 of Federal Law No. 353-FZ concern early repayment of the corresponding loan without prior notice.
What if the school is already in bankruptcy?
Identify the provider and case stage. A money claim requires a review of the special procedure and deadlines. The bank loan does not end automatically.
